How to Measure for Shelves Cut to Size
Getting your shelf measurements right is easy — and ensures your new shelves fit perfectly the first time.
This guide explains exactly how to measure for custom cut shelves, whether you're fitting:
- alcove shelves
- bookcase shelves
- floating shelves
- wardrobe shelves
- wall-mounted shelves
All we need are three numbers:
Length × Depth × Thickness
Getting Perfect Measurements for Your Custom Shelves
Accurate measurements are essential for custom-cut shelves that fit perfectly first time. Follow this simple guide to measure your alcove or wall space correctly and avoid costly mistakes.
What You'll Need
- Steel tape measure (at least 3 metres)
- Pencil and paper for recording measurements
- Spirit level (optional but recommended)
- Helper (useful for larger alcoves)
Step 1: Measure the shelf length
Measure the left-to-right opening where the shelf will sit
Take measurements at:
- the front
- the middle
- the back
Walls are rarely perfectly square.
👉 Use the smallest measurement to ensure the shelf fits easily.
Example:
Front = 1012mm
Middle = 1008mm
Back = 1005mm
Shelf length to order = 1005mm
Step 2: Measure the shelf depth
Depth is the front-to-back measurement.
Measure from the wall to the front edge
Decide if you want:
- flush to wall
- or a small front overhang
👉 Typical shelf depths:
Book shelves: 180–250mm
Wardrobe shelves: 400–600mm
Alcove shelves: varies by space
Step 3: Choose shelf thickness
Thickness affects:
- strength
- resistance to sagging
- visual style
Typical recommendations:
18mm — light duty shelves
25mm — general purpose shelves
30–40mm — long spans or heavy loads
Example measurement
Alcove shelf:
Length: 1005mm
Depth: 220mm
Thickness: 25mm
This is exactly what you enter in the Artisaw size calculator.
💡 Pro Measuring Tips
- Always measure twice, cut once
- Use the smallest width measurement if your alcove tapers
- Deduct 3-5mm from depth for fitting tolerance
- Take photos of your space and send them with your order

Common Measuring Mistakes to Avoid
❌ Using only one width measurement – Always measure at multiple points
❌ Forgetting about skirting boards – These reduce your usable depth
❌ Measuring in inches then converting – Measure in millimetres from the start
❌ Not allowing fitting tolerance – Shelves cut to exact measurements won't fit
